History
The German-Canadian Benevolent Society’s development from its beginnings in 1965 to the present has not been without challenges. The Society originated with a small band of dedicated German immigrants under the leadership of Frau Elisabeth Ochs (1903 – 1990) who founded the care home for fellow Germans who needed care and companionship due to advanced age.
In 1969, the German-Canadian Care Home was built on its present site at 2010 Harrison Drive in Vancouver. When the Home originally opened, its intended purpose was to provide “personal care” services for senior citizens. Over the years it became apparent that more services were required and, with that in mind, the Care Home joined the B.C. Long Term Care Program in 1978.
The German-Canadian Care Home is a two-story facility providing care to 134 residents. Since its original construction, the Home has undergone numerous renovations to enhance its homelike environment and functionality.
Beautiful gardens surround the Care Home and the many outdoor courtyards are connected by paved walkways. In 1979 the German-Canadian Care Home was the first long term care facility in B.C. to receive an Accreditation award from the "Accreditation Canada".
The facility has since continued to maintain its Accreditation status.
