Musical Chair for Persons with Dementia

A Collaborative Research Project between the Emily Carr University of Art and Design and the German-Canadian Care Home

Irene Schmid, a student at Emily Carr’s Industrial Design program is developing a musical player for persons with dementia/ Alzheimer’s disease. The music player is embedded in a comfortable chair. When you sit down it recognizes you and plays your favorite songs. You don’t need to turn it on or off, just sit down and enjoy.

This chair could benefit many residents who are no longer able to turn on devices, giving them a sense of independence and fun.

This research project is supported by the Board and management team and carried out in close cooperation with the care home’s Occupational Therapist and Music Therapist.
